What Is Mini Bowling?

Mini bowling is an indoor game played on mini bowling lanes custom-designed for this version of bowling. You need the following to play:

• Mini bowling lanes
• Pins
• Bowling balls

How Does Mini Bowling Differ From Ten-Pin Bowling?

There are several ways mini bowling differs from traditional bowling, commonly called ten-pin bowling. 

Lane Length

Ten-pin bowling lanes are 60 feet long. This measurement applies to the area beginning at the foul line and does not include the approach.

Mini bowling lanes are half the length of ten-pin bowling lanes. 

Ball Size 

Ten-pin bowling balls are larger and can weigh up to 16 pounds. Mini bowling balls are much smaller and similar to Duckpin bowling balls, with a weight of less than four pounds and a five-inch circumference.

Mini Bowling Game Length 

Ten-pin bowling games have ten frames, which means players typically have 20 throws per game. Mini bowling games are five frames long, so players typically have ten throws.

What Is the Objective of Mini Bowling?

Mini bowling has the same objective as ten-pin, duckpin, and candlestick bowling. Players throw the bowling ball down the lane and attempt to knock down all ten pins. The player with the highest score — representing the highest number of pins knocked down in a game — wins. 

How Do You Play? 

A mini bowling game is played just like a traditional bowling game. Each player gets two throws per frame. Players must release the ball without going over the foul line. 

Scoring

You don’t have to worry about keeping score because our electronic scoring system keeps track for you. However, it’s still handy to know how the score is tallied so you can explain it to new players if you need to.

Players get a point for each pin they knock down. Players get extra points if they get a strike or a spare. 

Strike

Players can score a strike by knocking all the pins down with their first throw in a frame. When this happens, the player does not use their second throw during that frame. Instead, the scores from their next two throws count twice. During their next frame, the scores from both throws are counted for that frame the way they usually would. However, those scores are also added to the score for the prior fame when they earned their strike. 

Suppose you scored a strike. During your next frame, you knocked down five pins on your first throw and four pins on your second throw. Your score for that frame would be nine. Your score for the prior frame, where you earned the strike, would be ten plus nine, or 19.

Spare

A spare occurs when you knock down all the pins in one frame. Suppose you knocked down five pins with your first throw and five pins with your second throw. You earned a spare.

When you earn a spare, you get bonus points during your next frame because the first throw of your next frame counts twice. Suppose you knock down six pins on the first throw of your next frame. Your score for the prior fame, where you earned the spare, would be ten plus six, or 16.
